Day 31 - Modernity

Oh my goodness. It was 100 degrees today. We were all dying. We started out in the Courtauld, which is a former home which is now turned art gallery. Because it is on the small side, Martha was not allowed to lecture in it. So instead of that, she gave us a huge assignments. We had to write on three specific works: Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergene (required), Cezanne's La Montagne Sainte-Victoire (we just had to choose one of his works), and Campin's Triptych with the Entombment (required). Then we had to write on three additional works of our choosing. I chose Seurat's Young Woman Powdering herself, Van Gogh's Self-Portrait with a Bandaged Ear, and Derain's Fishermen at Collioure. Here are pictures of the works, in order.







After I finished that somewhat stressful assignment, I looked around the museum for a while.

Then we were instructed to go to the Tate Modern.
Wow. It was so incredibly exhausting and mind-numbing. We were running through the museum to get to all the works she wanted us to see. It was crazy! But a good experience nonetheless :)

After that, we went back to the hotel. We went to a cheap place for dinner. Got fish and chips again. Yummy :) Then we got packed up to head for the next town - Antwerp, Belgium.

Those close-ups of the Seurat and the Van Gogh are so cool!!

Do you remember any works in particular from the Tate Modern that you really liked? One of the times I was there they had a HUGE installation made of white plastic blocks that filled the entire main floor! It was very interesting - you could walk around it all and see the mountains and tunnels, etc that were created from the blocks.

Ordinateur Portable

My Favorite Things #38/365 I have had this laptop since I was 14 years old. I cease to be amazed at how long it has lasted! The keys don't look like they've hardly been used (even though they have been used A LOT) and it has rarely given me any trouble! It is very useful to have the laptop here at my apartment. I use it every day. I don't know what I would do without it!! It isn't very portable, but that's alright. I don't really want to take notes in class on a computer, so there really isn't any need to move it, at least not for now.

You wish your art class was as cool as mine

What could this possibly be? Well it is installation art. Which is probably the most exciting art there is. If you've never tried it, you haven't lived. So here's our concept. Our world today is drifting away from nature and becoming more connected to technology. However, there are still those hippies who are completely tied to nature. We made this literal with saran wrap. Now she is still tied to nature, but not quite so much. Perhaps this could represent someone who wants to go green. I don't know. The beauty of modern art is that you can make it mean whatever you want. Now Corinne here is only a little bit tied to nature. Sure, she'll recycle every once in a while, if it is convenient. I would say many people fall in this category. And finally, she represents someone who is completely relying on technology. Yeah, she is still connected to the saran wrap, but only because she has to step on nature sometimes to get around. What do you think?
